Course Name:Quick Cut
Description:Quick-cut Training is ½ day (4 hour) duration and includes theory and practical demonstration sessions. Quick-cut skills covered in this workshop include WHS requirements, features of the machine, hazards of operation, correct operating procedure from start-up to shut-down.

The purpose of this course is to give participants the basic skills and knowledge to operate a cut off machine (quick cut) safely (and legally):

  • WHS requirements

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Risk Assessment on the job (identification of hazards)

  • Selection/use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment

  • Identify the main external features cut-off machine i.e. throttle, stop switch, etc.

  • Identify hazards associated with the use of a Cut-Off Machine

  • Explain pre / post operation checks, recommended fuel mix

  • Demonstrate correct starting procedures

  • Identify correct cutting wheel selection for the job

  • Demonstrate correct cutting wheel fitment / guard adjustment (blotter for abrasive wheels, correct and matched flanges)

  • Identify unsafe operation conditions

  • Explain safe working practices

  • Demonstrate correct and safe operating procedures

    Teaching strategy:
Lectures, demonstrations, student workbooks, various handouts, practical training.

Method of assessment: Oral / written tests, multiple choice questions, short answer questions, verbal questions, practical exercises.

Entry requirements: Participants will need to meet the age requirements as stated in relevant Government regulations or industrial awards, and will need to demonstrate the physical and psychological capacity to manipulate a quick cut machine safely and accurately.

Student numbers: 8 per class (nominal).

Attendance: Participants must attend all sessions to achieve competence.

Trainer/s: Our instructors are appropriately qualified and have recognised teaching qualifications including Workplace Assessor.

General information: All training aids including chainsaws and safety equipment will be provided for use as required. Student notes, good for future reference are supplied to each student and may be retained. Suitable timber is required for the practical component of the course. Participants are required to wear/bring their own steel capped boots.
  • Units:Non-accredited

Duration:4 Hours - course duration may depend on course numbers, experience and performance of participants.
Prerequisites:Employers must supply suitable material* for the practical component of this course.

What we need the employer to provide:

  • A training room (with power) for the theory component of the course.

  • Cutting material* suitable for replicating the potential for a kickback situation to occur.

  • Water on tap to attach to our concrete saw (we have a hose)

  • A location under cover could be beneficial (but not essential) on a hot day or if rainy weather is expected (the undercover location must be well ventilated, such as a shed with no sides)

  • Participants are required to wear/bring their own steel capped boots

  • We provide:

  • Handouts and assessments

  • Mandatory PPE

  • A concrete saw

  • A concrete saw... with cutting wheel, fuel & hose

  • *Cutting material requirements explained for the practical:

  • Cutting material of suitable size and weight is required (so it can be stabilized and will not move)

  • Small pieces of concrete (especially bricks) are not suitable as they cannot be adequately stabilized to prevent movement whilst cutting (and this is potentially dangerous)

  • Concrete pipe is ideal.

  • It only needs to be 400mm to 450mm in diameter, 2 meters or more in length

  • This can be adequately stabilized in order to be safe

  • It enables the potential for undesirable side-load to occur whilst cutting

  • It also demonstrates a typical situation where it is possible for kick-back to occur

  • It does not require excessive bending by the participant and is therefore easier on backs
  • Qualification:Statement of attendance
Notes:Participants will need to meet the age requirements as stated in relevant Government regulations or industrial awards, and will need to demonstrate the physical and psychological capacity to manipulate a cut off machine.
